Magnus Carlsen claims inaugural Chess Esports World Cup title
Chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen added another feather to his colourful cap when he claimed the inaugural Chess Esports World Cup title on Friday.

The Norwegian legend, representing Team Spirit, faced Alireza Firouzja in the Grand Final. Carlsen emerged victorious with a composed and dominant performance, winning two consecutive sets 3–1.
Carlsen began strong with a win and two draws, taking a 3-1 lead. But Team Eagle's Firouzja made a comeback, capitalising on a rare rook blunder by Carlsen, earning his only win after 50 moves.
Carlsen responded ruthlessly, punishing Firouzja's weak openings and sealing the match with calm precision. His ability to manage the clock and stay composed was highlighted by the live heart-rate displays, where Magnus remained steady while Firouzja showed visible pressure.
"It's been an amazing show, unlike anything that I've seen so far," said Carlsen.
"It's just been a joy, and I really hope that this is a big part of the future for chess.
Carlsen earned $250,000 and 1,000 Club Championship points, propelling Team Liquid into serious contention for the overall Club Championship trophy.
