Thomas Frank insists youngsters Archie Gray & Lucas Bergvall ready for Tottenham starts
Thomas Frank has insisted that Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are ready for Premier League starts after the pair impressed during Tottenham's 5-3 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray of Tottenham The Spurs boss has not confirmed whether the youngsters will both start against Fulham on Saturday.
Frank made sweeping changes for the Champions League trip to Paris, looking for a reaction after Tottenham's derby loss to Arsenal. Gray and Bergvall were among those recalled, with the head coach moving away from his 3-4-3 system in search of greater control and energy.
Despite the result, both teenagers delivered one of Spurs' brightest midfield performances of the season. Their return from injury has been timely, and they injected urgency into Tottenham's play.
The duo combined superbly for the opening goal, exchanging passes on the byline before Gray picked out Randal Kolo Muani at the far post, who then set up Richarlison to finish.
Gray was also involved in Tottenham's second. His glancing touch looped onto the crossbar, leaving Kolo Muani to react quickest and volley home the rebound. Even in defeat, the pair's influence stood out.
Speaking to the club's official channel, Frank made his stance clear on their readiness. "I think if you perform like you did against the European champions away from home, you are ready to start in the Premier League," he said.
Tottenham must now make key selection calls ahead of Fulham's visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Frank's rotation meant that Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Joao Palhinha all started on the bench in Paris, and the trio are expected to return to the XI on Saturday.
However, Frank is considering keeping at least one of his young midfielders in the line-up. Rodrigo Bentancur's underwhelming form this season could open the door for either Gray or Bergvall to retain their place as Spurs try to regain momentum in a demanding period of the campaign.
